PAUL SMITHS - The Paul Smith's College basketball team gave the Yankee Conference's top-ranked team all it could handle but came up short as the New Hampshire Technical Instititute claimed a 68-62 victory over the Bobcats Saturday.
The 'Cats suffered a 30-point road loss to the Capitals the last time the two teams met, but stayed in the game from start to finish on their home floor this time around. The visitors owned a 35-30 lead at halftime, and their biggest edge after intermission was six points, which turned out to be the winning margin.
Alex Medina of Paul Smith's and Ahntwan Harris of NHTI each tossed in 17 points to share game-scoring honors. Jackson Riel and Terry Williams also hit in double figures for the winners with 16 and 14 points, respecitively.
The other Bobcats scored in double figures with Shiva Senthil finishing with 15, Adam Klock adding 15 and Connor McCuin chipping in 10 points. Kloc knocked down all his points from beyond the arc, finishing with a game-high five 3-point field goals.
The Capitals came up big with less than 10 minutes left in the second half when they hit four tough jump shots to maintain a slim lead.
"The key to this game was controlling their transition offense attack and keeping them out of the lane. We executed the game plan very well," Paul Smith's head coach Joe Akey said. "I thought this game came down to three possessions where we lost our defensive focus or turned it over. Those possessions were self inflicted and that was the difference in the game today. We played very well."
Paul Smith's fell to 3-7 in the conference and 3-12 overall with the setback. The Bobcats are back in action again tonight at home, hosting the University of Maine Machias starting at 7 p.m.
