TUPPER LAKE - The Tupper Lake school board has approved a salary agreement with its new interim middle/high school principal and a future pay raise for its superintendent.

Matthew Southwick, a middle/high school guidance counselor, is serving as interim principal from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2013. He will get a 10 percent salary increase on top of his regular pay to fulfill the principal's duties, under the contract the board approved at its meeting Monday night.

Superintendent Seth McGowan said the increase gives Southwick an annual salary of $68,407, but he noted that the raise is pro-rated for just the six months that Southwick is filling in as principal.

McGowan had been serving as both middle/high school principal and district superintendent for roughly a year-and-a-half, before he advised the board last fall that the workload of holding both job was too demanding. The district is in the process of searching for a permanent middle/high school principal.

The board also voted Monday to approve a contract addendum for McGowan that gives him a 2 percent salary increase in the 2014-15 school year, the final year of his current three-year contract with the district. McGowan has also agreed to cap the school district's contribution to his health insurance coverage, as he's done the last several years.

McGowan's current salary is $130,732. It will increase by 2 percent in each of the next two years.

Both McGowan's contract addendum and Southwick's salary agreement were approved unanimously and without any discussion by the school board.
