Tupper Lake village will hire someone to fill its website

TUPPER LAKE - The town and village decided in April to buy a website to give people information on the municipalities, but so far very little has been added to it.

The village is now looking to pay someone to load all the initial information onto

"There's somewhat of a learning curve to the software program," village Trustee Rick Donah said at a recent meeting. "No one wants to take it on in the village."

Village Clerk Mary Casagrain said the issue is that village employees don't have time to do it.

Casagrain said the village is willing to pay somewhere around $2,500 for the work.

Trustee Leon LeBlanc asked why the municipalities need a website in addition to the one the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce has been running. Donah told him the village is years behind other municipalities. Plus, the municipalities have been advised by attorneys to keep their website separate from the chamber's.

Once the initial information is added, village employees will be expected to do upkeep on the site, like posting meeting agendas and other public information.

The town and village are splitting the price of the website, which is costing $2,635 for the first year and $375 annually after that. When the municipalities first bought the site, representatives said they hoped to have it ready to launch in May.

Part of the reason for creating the website was a new portion of the state Open Meetings Law that went into effect in February that requires municipalities to, wherever possible, post meeting agendas and documents to be discussed in open meetings online wherever possible, so the public can peruse them before the meeting is held.

Since the law went into effect, the village has been scanning such documents and emailing them before or shortly after meetings to the members of the press who regularly attend. The town has been providing copies of documents in folders for the Enterprise and the Tupper Lake Free Press when reporters show up to board meetings.

The town board hasn't discussed the website in public session in some time.
