4th Judicial District results could be released soon

Voters may soon learn who won the race for the state Supreme Court's Fourth Judicial District.

Derinda Sherman, Essex County's Republican elections commissioner, said there will be a court hearing today relating to a Nov. 14 impoundment order, which was the result of a petition filed by Republican justice candidate Felix Catena, a Montgomery County Court judge.

"It should be determined, I think, within a very short time," Sherman said.

Asked for a more specific time frame, Sherman said the results could be available within the next few days.

Eight candidates ran for four seats in the Fourth District. Unofficial vote tallies have been made public in 10 out of the district's 11 counties, but those don't include absentee ballots. Vote counts generally show Republican Joseph Sise leading the race, with Democrat Christine Clark in second. Republicans Thomas Buchanan, Catena and John Ellis, as well as Democrat Mark Powers, are bunched closely in the middle, and Democrats John Silvestri and Jeffrey Wait appear to have the least votes.

The Enterprise contacted the state Board of Elections on Wednesday for more information about the Fourth District election. John Conklin, director of public information, said he's not sure what the status of the race is.

"They're not sending us updates or anything like that," he said. "When the counties have completed their counts, which includes affidavit, emergency and absentee ballots - and they have 25 days to do that under the statute - that's when we'll get information from them regarding what the status of the Fourth JD is.

"Each individual county board within the Fourth JD is completing their counts under the supervision of the court."
