Show kids they matter; decide on skatepark

To the editor:

Mr. Mayor, in regard to the Saranac Lake SkatePark, I've been involved in getting a skateboard park put into Saranac Lake for many years; as a group, we have all worked really hard to research and fundraise in order that our children could have a skatepark in Saranac Lake.

I personally like Ampersand Avenue, the best of all locations that have been discussed. It is a very visible site with other activity in and around it. The concerns voiced at the recent board meeting are valid, but in retrospect, we have been tabling this project for years! It is not possible to make all of the people happy all of the time. The concern of foul language is a concern for all ages; however, I have heard basketball players and parents of the kids in parks who are often as vulgar as the teen population.

As for those who play tennis - we have tennis courts at the Saranac Lake High School, there is one on Lake Flower Avenue and another at Mount Pisgah. It seems that should be sufficient.

When I was a kid, we skateboarded on the streets. We had accidents, probably cussed and had fun. There was no threat of police intervention simply for the act of skateboarding.

It is my personal opinion that, in Saranac Lake, there is very little that is done to show the kids that they are respected or important to the village. I think it is important to vote yes on the skatepark at Ampersand.
