HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Former North Country Congressman David Martin has died at the age of 68.

WWNY-TV reported this morning that Martin "died at his home in West Virginia Tuesday night under the care of hospice and his family." Martin lived in Hedgesville, W.Va.

Martin was born in St. Lawrence County, was a 1966 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and earned his law degree at Albany Law School in 1973. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970.

A Republican, his political career included a stint on the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators and then two terms in the state Assembly, from 1977 to 1980. He went on to serve six consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1981 to 1993, when he was replaced by Rep. John McHugh after declining to seek re-election. After leaving the House, Martin worked for McHugh and also taught at the Naval War College from 1993 to 1994.

He endorsed Watertown businessman Matt Doheny in his 2010 bid for New York's 23rd Congressional District, and he again expressed support for Doheny this year, in an Oct. 29 letter published by the Enterprise.

WWNY reports that funeral arrangements "are being handled jointly by Island View Funeral Services of Morristown and O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton."
