Thanks for a night of trivia

November 16, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

Where did the original Oriental Express end? This was just one of the many challenging questions asked at a Trivia Night hosted by the Rotarians of Lake Placid on Nov. 1. This fun-filled evening tested the knowledge of more than a dozen teams of eight. Team Literacy Bombers, led by Cheryl Schiller, took first place, followed by the Slick Six, who slipped to second in the last round with the Fearless Forks in third. More importantly, this event raised public awareness and much-needed funds for Literacy Volunteers, a charitable organization that provides adult literacy programs in Essex and Franklin counties.

Support from clubs like the Rotarians is vital to the success of our organization, specifically to our students and tutors. With community support, local residents have received assistance to improve their education, often developing the necessary skills to gain employment in order to support themselves and their families. In the Tri-Lakes region alone, we have supported more than 50 adult learners this past year. We continue to support many English-as-a-second-language students who have chosen to make the North Country their home.

Literacy Volunteers would like to thank the Rotary Club of Lake Placid, contest participants and everyone else who helped make the evening such a success. We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to the next trivia contest!

Thank you,

Maria Burke
