CANTON - Local students are among the 11 beginning their studies at St. Lawrence University with a semester in London. This is the first time the option to study abroad has been offered to first-year students in the fall semester.

Local participants are:

Anna J. Kowanko, of Upper Jay, a graduate of Keene Central School.

Alexa R. Mitchell, of Westport, a graduate of Westport Central School.

St. Lawrence welcomed 669 first-year students on campus in Canton. Each first-year student participates in St. Lawrence University's innovative First-Year Program, an introduction to the liberal arts curriculum taught in residence halls by faculty teams. Clear writing and speaking skills are stressed, and careful advising is provided for all students.

Students in the London First-Year Program also live and study together, and take three additional courses. Through this program, students who view global engagement as an important goal of their education are able to take advantage of St. Lawrence's tradition of excellence in this area from the very start of their college careers.
