POINT AU ROCHE - Elena Beideck finished second in the girls' race and Zane Pelletieri was seventh in the boys' race to lead the Saranac Lake cross country team at a meet Tuesday.
Beideck completed the course in 20 minutes, 46 seconds to finish just behind Saranac's Lexi Blockson, who clocked a 20:31.
Other Red Storm girls point-scorers were: Jackie Garso (fifth, 21:18), Jacinda Riggs (seventh, 21:35), Remy Orticelle (18th, 24:16) and Kaileigh Woodruff (19th, 24:28).
Zane Pelletieri makes his way through the challenging course in Point Au Roche on Tuesday. Pelletieri finished seventh in the boys’ race.
"The girls tem had a few breakthroughs today," said Saranac Lake coach Joe Merrihew. "The girls team battled hard against the toughest Class C team in the league, Saranac Central.
"We made waves today, and with a few more weeks of hard training our girls team is looking to be real strong when it matters - the end of October."
The Red Storm girls recorded a 23-32 win over Beekmantown in the team scoring, but lost 22-37 to Saranac.
On the boys' side, Pelletieri finished in 17:26, trailing Colin Quackenbush of Beekmantown who crossed the line in 16:11.
Chris Willette (13th, 18:33) was the next-best Saranac Laker, followed by Max Paul (14th, 18:35), Chris Schneider (25th, 20:06) and Nate Miller (27th, 20:37).
The Red Storm boys suffered two losses in the team scoring, losing 17-42 to Beekmantown and 17-44 to Saranac.
"Our boys ran a very tough race today and put themselves in good postions against the two toughest teams in the league," Merrihew said. "Our lack of depth is our downfall, but we are making the best progress we can with the boys we have."
Northeastern Clinton 2, Saranac Lake 0
CHAMPLAIN - The Saranac Lake boys soccer team hung tough Thursday against unbeaten Northeastern Clinton, but had to settle for a 2-0 Northern Soccer League defeat.
Kyle McCarthy scored the game's only goals in the first half, scoring the first unassisted in the 14th minute and the second on a pass from Ryan Marks in the 23rd minute.
Saranac Lake goalkeeper Oliver Holmes kept the Red Storm within striking distance with nine saves. NCCS outshot Saranac Lake 15-4.
Thursday's game was a vast improvement for the Red Storm over the first meeting between the two teams when the Cougars won 6-0.
Saranac Lake fell to 1-7-1 with the loss. The Red Storm return to action next Thursday.
