June 8, 2011
By Deborah J. Donaldson , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

(Editor's note: This column will soon be renamed to reflect its new focus on not just Lake Clear but the entire area around Saranac Lake. If you have any name suggestions, get them to us at, 891-2600 ext. 30 or 54 Broadway, Saranac Lake.)

I'm starting a new format for my column this week, folks. I have been asked to write about Lake Clear, Paul Smiths, Gabriels and Bloomingdale, but I will need your help. If you have anything of interest, please call me at the number at the end of this column. Many thanks to you all.

St. John in the Wilderness church will hold its annual raffle again this year. First prize is a 10-foot, red Emotion kayak, second prize is a handmade Adirondack quilt with a lampshade to match, third prize is a handmade Adirondack furniture, and fourth prize is a custom-made cutting board, 15-inch by 15-inch.

Tickets are one for $2 or three for $5. For tickets, contact any church member or Sister Carol at 891-2286. The drawing for these prizes will be at the last Mass of the summer at Fish Creek campground on Aug. 28.

The card party at St. John in the Wilderness church hall will be 1 p.m. Sunday, June 19. Prizes and refreshments. Come and join your friends and neighbors in an afternoon of playing cards.

The bookmobile will be at the Lake Clear post office 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 21. Stop and pick up some good reading material.

On Thursday, June 16 at noon, the Lake Clear seniors will be traveling to Charlie's Inn for a luncheon. To make reservations, please call Mary Wirsing at 891-3469 or Nonie Webb at 891-6240.

The Lake Clear post office will have a one-day-only July 16 special commemorative postage cancellation at the Lake Clear post office.

Jill Brockway is looking for any memorabilia about the Lake Clear train station. If you have anything, call her at 891-9858.

Bentley and Irene Darling, former Lake Clear residents, now of Deltona, Fla., were surprised recently when all of their children and families stopped at their home in Florida for a visit.

Bentley said this is the first time in 30 years that they all have been together. Their children are Ed and Debbie Darling from Oakland, Maine; Liz and David Gilpin from Baton Rouge, La.; Sheryl and Peter Day of Tupper Lake; Cindy and Ed Milano from Deltona, Fla.; and Mark and June Darling of Paisley, Fla.

Chip and Kathy Button of Lake Clear will be taking their 1914 Depot Hack vehicle to Ray Brook, where every Tuesday at Curtis Lumber there are vintage, classic cars for show. From 6 p.m. to dark, people can enjoy these amazing cars. Talk to the drivers of these cars and get some of the history. For more information, please call Ben Kline at 572-6132.

Some Paul Smiths residents should remember Harry Purchase, who was the head of the hospitality department at Paul Smith's College for many years. He retired and spent winters in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and summers at The Wawbeek here. He passed away April 9. There will be a service in Rochester July 15. If you wish to send a card or letter to his wife: Terry Purchase, 3233 North East 34th St., Apt 1212A, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 33308.
