Update to senior tax exemptions

To the editor:

A recently passed resolution allows the town of North Elba to carry over senior citizens’ exemptions from the 2021 assessment roll to the 2022 roll at the same levels. This means that seniors in the town of North Elba do not have to reapply for the exemption unless their 2020 income would make them eligible for a larger exemption in 2022.

The purpose of the law is to protect our most vulnerable citizens during COVID-19 since many seniors prefer to reapply in person. If you have already submitted a renewal application for the exemption, we will determine which income tax year provides the larger exemption.

If you are turning 65 years of age before March 1, 2022, please contact our office to see if you qualify for the senior citizens’ exemptions. If you are turning 65 anytime during 2022, please contact us to switch your STAR exemption from basic to enhanced. Your 2020 income must be evaluated for each of these exemptions.

The town of North Elba Town Hall is currently closed to the public due to COVID-19 concerns, however, procedures are in place to accommodate those wanting to apply for the above exemptions. Please call 518-523-1975 or email dmueller@northelba.org for details. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2022.

Sincerely,

Todd Anthony,

Town assessor
