Re: ‘For Cobb, health care is vital but cure is uncertain’

To the editor:

Tedra Cobb is right on target with her idea for health insurance. Like Ms. Cobb, my position regarding health insurance has evolved in the past few years. I was formerly a supporter of single-payer health insurance, the “Medicare for All” promoted by Bernie Sanders.

One of the major objections to Sen. Sanders’ proposal is that the more than 156 million Americans who currently receive coverage through their jobs (employer-sponsored health insurance) are understandably reluctant to give up this benefit for a relative unknown.

Currently, individuals who do not have employer-sponsored health insurance (like my wife) must navigate a complicated marketplace and pay hefty premiums (in her case $669.48 per month with an annual deductible of $2,400). Even now we are not quite sure what is covered and what is not. A public “buy-in” option for Medicare should be available. Everyone should have reliable affordable health insurance.
