Use tax money to save lives, not for sports venues

To the editor:

Something is seriously amiss in the ‘Dacks when TWO HUNDRED FORTY MILLION BUCKS of taxpayer dollars is going to wherever Prince Andrew and those other elusive will-o’-the wisp dukes and earls on them there “international sanctioning bodies” say it must in the “Olympic venues,” while human life is at stake here ‘most every day of the year and nobody is doing anything about it.

I refer, of course, to the abysmal (or deliberate?) ignorance of our so-called political and executive branch leaders in directing firehose-flow bucks down the money sewer that is the Olympic Regional Development Authority while ignoring the crying need for more forest rangers.

Yesterday the Enterprise reported, yet again, that an unprepared hiker’s life was saved by the forest rangers, this time by no less than 10 of the total 55-member Adirondack force. “Forest Ranger Nathan Shea hiked in from the Dead Creek trailhead while nine other forest rangers responded to the location … using two airboats. … Shea found the 38-year old male hiker from West Point at 1:57 a.m. … The hiker said … he was not fully prepared for the hike and did not have winter-weight boots or enough food.”

The Enterprise also recently reported that the rangers said they would forego a raise if that would bring additional staff. Whoa. That should get our attention.

Please, please, I beg you, fellow citizens, let Betty, Billy, Andrew and Basil know how you feel about this no-less-than tragic situation.
