I get it, but …

To the editor:

I get it: The Republicans’ latest strategy is to claim that the Democrats are trying to “shut down the young woman from New York” (as Rep. Damon Nunes, who formerly chaired the House Intelligence Committee, referred to our member of Congress, Elise Stefanik).

(Note to Elise: You’re too smart to be a patronized stooge for Trump and his enablers. It’s no accident that you, the only Republican woman on the Intelligence Committee, got designated to play the part of the “victim” of the Big Bad Democrats. You must have understood you were being used.)

Although the rules of the impeachment inquiry by the U.S. House of Representatives were published weeks ago, and Rep. Stefanik KNEW her attempts to speak in violation of those rules would be ruled out of order, she is now claiming that she was, as my children used to put it, “unfaired” by Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. In fact, Rep. Schiff has been scrupulous in applying the rules established for the process — giving equal time for questioning to Republicans and Democrats, giving the Republicans opportunities to call their own witnesses, objecting to witness tampering, and upholding the integrity of the process, American values and American national interests.

That “Elise Stefanik got shut down” is is a crock, and those of us who care about the integrity of our foreign policy and have listened to the evidence presented to date know that she is being manipulated by forces in the Republican Party who have an agenda entirely contrary to the normal values of an elected representative and Rep. Stefanik’s stated desire to represent the North Country.

Which should lead us to ask, “Elise, where is your greater loyalty: to your constituents in NY-21? Or to the administration of Donald Trump? Do you really want to be remembered as a woman who represented the people of NY-21 or as the congresswoman who supported the “grab ’em by the p***y,” bribing, and law-breaking Donald Trump?

Rep. Stefanik’s woman constituents ask, “Why, Elise, are you letting men in power define you by your youth and your gender?” You are way too smart and too savvy to let that happen.

Elise, it is not too late for you to make the honorable choice. Admit that the evidence presented to your committee shows that the president you previously supported has tried to bribe a foreign government by conditioning military aid on a promise to investigate his political opponent.

And vote to impeach him.
