Arthur Volmrich, actor

To the editor:

Jeweler Arthur Volmrich loved to perform. He danced with a Bulgarian folk group in Pittsburgh before moving to Lake Placid. He appeared often with the Community Theatre Players and Pendragon. He even got paid one summer to play the lawyer in “Deathtrap” at Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

His favorite role was Luther Billings in “South Pacific.” His best role was in “Oh! What a Lovely War,” in which he played both Kaiser Wilhelm and General Douglas Haig to chilling affect. We sang and danced together to “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid” in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

He played Oscar in “The Odd Couple.” We spent a lot of time in a prop trunk together playing the old actors in “The Fantasticks.” He even gave his own farewell in Chekhov’s “Swan Song”: “Away, the moor is dark beneath the moon. Rapid clouds have drunk the last pale light of evening. Away, the gathering winds will call the darkness soon and profoundest midnight shroud the serene lights of heaven.”

Break a leg, Arthur!
