R.L. Stevenson Cottage worth the wait

Dear editor,

Last week my husband and I stayed in Lake Placid for a few days and while we were there we took a ride to Saranac Lake. We saw a sign for the Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage and it reminded us how much we enjoyed our first visit there about fifteen years ago. When we got there the museum was not open but we called the phone number on the sign and the man who answered said he would open it in 20 minutes. It was well worth the wait.

Robert Louis Stevenson, a world famous author, was suffering from respiratory illness, and came to Saranac Lake for “the cure” in 1887. The rooms he and his family lived in are filled with their personal mementos and possessions. This tour was a remarkably personal experience and made us feel like part of the family.

This year marks 100 years of the founding of this museum and although no celebration has been planned, this anniversary deserves recognition. I hope the town leaders will take advantage of the opportunity to bring this remarkable treasure to the attention of residents and visitors to Saranac Lake. Mike Delahant, the Curator, is a wealth of information and if you are any where near Saranac Lake be sure to visit this historic treasure.
