Keep the rails

To the editor:

The state’s decision with respect to the Adirondack rail line is not good news. The rail line is the only way to preserve the wild and pristine nature of the Adirondacks. A trail will mean noise and polluted air along with the danger that both ATVs and snowmobiles are sure to bring. The trail will not be accessible to a majority of persons. Most do not own such things or are not marathon runners.

It is the easy way out for thin-skinned bureaucrats who can think only of splitting the difference. It is no way to preserve what brings visitors to the Adirondacks. There already are trails for those who choose to ride such machines?

It is quite probable that removing the rails for irresponsible, self-indulgent, thrill-seeking uses that seriously compromise the integrity of a natural environment will be regretted in the future. And it may not be very far in the future.

Sincerely,

Bill McDonald
