A cheap renaming

To the editor:

Regarding the Paul Smith’s-Joan Weill debate, maybe we need to look at the amount Weill is offering, a mere $20 million. David Geffen gave $100 million to Lincoln Center in New york City to rename Avery Fisher Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic, with his name. (He’d already given $10.5 million in 1973 to renovate the sound quality in the hall.) And David H. Koch, the conservative industrialist, gave $100 million to change the New York State Theater to the David H. Koch Theater. Is Joan Weill trying to get away with having an entire college named after her for, relatively speaking, a mere pittance? Should we Adirondackers accept such a slight?
