There are newspapers all around the country that don’t get a lot of letters to the editor, even around Election Day. The Enterprise is not one of those newspapers.

To us, the letters we’re receiving in the lead up to Election Day are evidence of how engaged our communities are in local politics. That’s exciting to see.

Look at the letters on today’s Opinion page, and the letters to the editor that have been published in the Enterprise throughout the past few weeks, and you’ll see your neighbors, coworkers, friends, family and fellow community members sharing their opinions about who they’d like to see in office, whether that be an incumbent or a newcomer.

Whether you agree or disagree with what they’ve wrote, they’ve chosen to share their perspective because they feel invested in the outcome of these local elections.

Local elections do matter.

Lots of voters show up to the polls in presidential election years, but there’s usually significantly lower voter turnout during local election years like this one.

Local elected officials make decisions all the time that have a direct impact on our lives and, lest we forget, our wallets. They also make decisions that impact the future of our communities.

Whether you plan to vote early, vote on Election Day or vote absentee, you’re doing your civic duty. If you’re not planning to vote this year, we urge you to change your mind. Your voice matters. Your vote matters.

If you live in Franklin County, you can vote early starting today at the county Board of Elections office in Malone. If you live in Essex County, there are two early voting sites this year — one at the Lake Placid Beach House on Parkside Drive, and one at the North Hudson Town Offices on U.S. Route 9. Early voting will be open until Oct. 31.

If you’d like to write a letter to the editor to endorse a candidate, you’ve still got some time before Election Day. Emphasis on the “before Election Day” part. The Enterprise is continuing its tradition of not publishing election related letters on Election Day. The deadline to submit election related letters for editions leading up to Election Day is Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m.

This year, in addition to our ongoing coverage of local elections, the Enterprise has printed a special election edition to give voters a single newspaper edition they can pick up to get some information on who’s running for office in their town. Print space is limited, so voters will be able to access even more information on our website at adirondackdailyenterprise.com. We’ll also have more election coverage — including coverage of the town council race in St. Armand and the Tupper Lake mayoral race — coming next week.
