More Carnival highlights (The Enterprise, Feb. 13, 1967)

The “Carnival Highlights” covered here last week featured the parade, the Rotary show, the skating races and some of the float winners … but there were plenty of other events. How about this?

Greased pig contest

“With about seven or eight members on each team, and five minutes to accumulate point totals, the contest was lost by the pigs. The Rotary Club came in first, the Lions Club second, the Moose Club third and the American Legion fourth.”

“Under the Ice” treasures

“The ‘Under the Ice Treasure Hunt,’ sponsored by the Champlain Wreck Raiders, produced a winner, Mr. Joe Leblanc, who was given a trophy for finding the most unusual object under the ice: a wicker chair.”

Wood-chopping contest

“The wood-chopping event drew a large crowd Saturday morning and was sponsored by the Forestry Club of Paul Smith’s College. No prizes or trophies were awarded in this presentation.”

Students build snow sculptures

“Parent Teachers Association President Robert Kampf has announced the winners in snow sculpture by the elementary school students.

“The huge American flag in Riverside Park was judged the best, and the rocket beside it was given second place.

“There are no prizes awarded for the sculpture, it is merely a contribution of the PTA and the students as an attraction to the carnival weekend.

“Judge were Angus Voudren and Mayor Howard Riley.”

The real snowshoe races

“The Senior Men’s Division, aged 16 to 28, was won by Roger Hesseltine of Saranac Lake with Greg Walker of Saranac Lake second and Phil Brown of Paul Smith’s College, third. The winning time was 11:45.

“The Senior Men’s Division, over 29, showed Ronnie Hesseltine of Saranac Lake in first place with a time of 12:05, Bill Frenette of Tupper Lake in second and Tom Kilfoyle of Onchiota in third. Bill Frenette won in age at 40, he was the oldest competitor.

“The Boys Group, 10 to 12, was won by James Davis of Saranac Lake; Billy Hagar of Saranac Lake was second, and Joe Amero of Saranac Lake was third.

“The Girls Group 10 to 12, was won by Cindy Frenette of Tupper Lake with Kerry Hesseltine of Saranac Lake second and Mimi Frenette of Tupper Lake third.

“The Mixed Group of 7 to 9, and one girl, Nancy Utterback, who won it, with Chris Hart second and Ricky Wenke third, all of Saranac Lake.

“Two Saranac Lake boys vied for the under 6 prize, with Sean Hart beating Ricky Jewtraw.”

Support for Lake Placid convention facility

“Three top leaders of the Lake Placid Club and the Lake Placid Company which owns and operates the Club have issued strong statements in favor of the $480,000 bond issue to match the $480,000 grant offered by the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce to build expanded convention facilities on the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid.

“The three are Andrew M. McBurney, president of the Club, Dwight Mills, president of the Company and, Henry Uihlein, vice-president of the Company.

“A statement issued to the North Elba Park District voters by the North Elba Town Board, pointed out that ‘these endorsements come from three people who are themselves heavy taxpayers and who are, in large part, are responsible for the success of the Lake Placid Club and the Lake Placid Company.’

“The Board’s statement stressed that the ‘Lake Placid Company is by far the largest taxpayer in the Park District and these officers must be thoroughly sold on this project to be willing to assume this added burden for their company.’

“The referendum on the bond issue takes place this coming Thursday, February 16.”

The beautiful Convention Center now attached to the 1932 Olympic Arena — which also houses the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce, better known as ROOST (Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism) — was completed in 2011.
