Saranac Lake police blotter, March-April 1930

The dog complaints have been part of village history forever … dog stories are in the news today just as they were in 1930 … just as they were in the 1960’s when I was village Mayor… USVP Hubert Humphrey once told me that dogs running loose were a problem when he was Mayor of Minneapolis.

March 4, 5:45 a.m. — Complaint from neighborhood of 19 Franklin Avenue. Dogs were disturbing the peace and quiet. Investigated and found a female mongrel [?] police dog [?] with several others. Tried to catch them but was unable so killed the female and another one, a Shepherd. They had no licenses. — Officer Moody

March 15, 11 p.m. – Mrs. Dubray of 32 Olive St. complained of a dance going on at a house near Neil and McComb Street. Investigated and found out it was a private affair. They stopped dancing at 12 midnight. There was no noise upon my arrival so I did not go in. — McPherson

March 16, 8:30 p.m. — Complaint from Mrs. Virgil Smith of 12 Jenkins St. that her husband, Virgil, was beating her. Officer Coughlin [Jim Coughlin was later Chief] and myself investigated at once. Warned Mr. Smith to stop same.She did not want him arrested. – Officer Moody

March 17, 9 p.m. — Complaint from Mrs. James Davidson, 64 Park Avenue in regard to Frank Krauder’s children of 15 Baker St. Shouting and raising hell, same disturbing the guests at her house. Notified Mrs. Krauder of the above. She advised me to tell the dammed bitch to mind her own business and take care of the Davidson family. Mrs. Davidson has had the two boys in Children’s Court for the same thing. She said she would do the same thing if the above nuisance did not stop. — Officer oody —

March 20, 11 p.m. — Complaint from Mrs. A. W. Currier that her tenant, Miss Maude Weidmer, 22 Margaret St. was running a free and easy place. Interviewed Florence McGarry who was in the above place, apt. C with Larry McCormick. Notified Maude, who rents same, that she has been warned about this for the last time. Mrs. Currier was to notify Maude to vacate. — Chief

March 30, 1:30 a.m. — Hurry call to 22 Margaret St. Apartment downstairs of Cal Davies was in an uproar. His stepson Ray,got a bad cut on his foot. Same was done by a glass pitcher or a bottle. Calvin was drunk and abusive so we placed him under arrest and locked him up. His wife and Ray and a young lady who is rooming there came down to the police station to file a complaint against him. The cut on Ray’s foot is quite serious. The Judge gave a Cal a 180 day suspended sentence on condition he leave town and stay away from Saranac Lake for six months. — Officers Jones and Putnam

April 2, 10 a.m. — Complaint from Mrs. Joseph Pohl, Santanoni Avenue that dogs in that area were very annoying. A number of them were following a female, very disgraceful, she said. Investigated by Officer Putnam who caught the female Police dog and took her to the incinerator and disposed of same. — Chief

April 10, 5:30 p.m. — Mrs. D. Clark of the Red Cross reported the loss of her Cook’s pocketbook, belonging to Mrs. P.A. Curran. She lives at the rear of St. Bernard’s Church. Same containing $25.00 in money also a check for $2.25 from Sears/Roebuck.It was a Gray/Brown purse last with her when she got into Drury’s Taxi. — Chief

April 14, 7 p.m. – There seems to some trouble between Mrs. Halsburg making a nuisance of herself at No. 57 Bloomingdale Ave. where her husband is a patient being kept by the county. Dr. Packard seems to think that she has a right to be with her husband. The county officials do not want her around after 9:30 p.m. asshe is annoying to the nurses, fighting with her husband and disturbing the other patients. — Officer Jones

April 16, 6 p.m. — Complaint from Mrs. Archie Lynden of South Edward Street that Parnell Symonds, night chef at the Potter Restaurant had connections with her daughter Maybelle, and she is in the family way. Wanted to know what she could do about same. — Officer McPherson

April 18, 1 a.m. — Call to 19 Academy Street. Upon my arrival, Mrs. Slater complained that Homer Baker was on the war path. I heard a window break, his wife saw me coming and turned out the lights, thenthe noise stopped. I went back several times but everything was alright. — Officer Putnam

April 20, 6:45 p.m. — Complaint from Mrs. John Waterhouse, DorseyTerrace, that there was a police dog that killed three chickens. The dog belonged to Mrs. Ted Bondrey, 21 Lake St. Interviewed the above party who admitted same.She promised to see Mrs. Waterhouse and to keep her dog home. — Chief

April 23, 1:15 a.m. — Orville Brown, age 24 yrs., residence 55 River St., reported that as he was walking to Saranac Lake from Ray Brook about midnight nearing the Fowler crossing [the RR crossing?] when three men in a Chevrolet car stopped him and as he started to run away two of them chased him. They fired three shots at him. Brown then returned the fire and one of then fell and yelled he was hit. Brown kept on running and came to the police station. I went out that way but was unable to locate anybody. [Nothing to get excited about, I guess.] — Officer Jones —

April 27, 7:15 a.m. — Complaint from Curling Club taxi stand — [now Madden’s Storage & Moving on River Street]. Someone tampered with the lock, looked over the place with Herbert Bailey one of the taxi drivers, nothing seemed disturbed. Office John Doe was accused of conduct unbecoming an officer. His resignation was asked for which he gave to the village manager and signed in my presence. Office Doe was drunk and abusive to Herbert Bailey, called him a son-of-a-bitch and struck him in the face. There were several witnesses to the above. — Officer Coughlin
