Image of the Week

Thursday marked the 100th anniversary of the death of John Baxter Black. John had been curing from intestinal tuberculosis in Saranac Lake for five years. In May of 1923, he went to Montreal for surgery, and unfortunately died from complications. His family in Mansfield, Ohio, generously donated the funds and design of the John Black Room Library addition to the Saranac Laboratory in his memory. A different portrait of John hangs over the fireplace in the Library today, but John’s second cousin, once removed, recently shared this earlier portrait with us. In honor of John’s memory, and with generous support from the Robert and Esther Black Family Foundation and Fund at the Richland County Foundation, we are updating our interpretation in the Library. Stay tuned for new exhibit panels that share more about John’s time in Saranac Lake and his legacy in our museum. (Photo provided — John Baxter Black portrait, WWI. Courtesy of Daniel Woodruff.)
