David L. Ploof

David L. Ploof, 71, of Lake Placid, passed away on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022 at Adirondack Health in Saranac Lake. He was born on March 15, 1951 to Edward and Lenore Ploof of St. Regis Falls.

David spent the majority of his life in Lake Placid and loved everything about the community. He worked for the Lake Placid Olympic Committee in the sales department from 1978-1980. He was a dedicated volunteer at a number of local running and cross-country ski events. His time in the restaurant industry spanned many years. He took great pride in his work and was known for his attention to detail and organization. It was because of these qualities that his work family deemed him “The G.O.A.T.”

David was an avid runner, logging over 37 years of running without missing a day. He was a charter member of the Lake Placid Road Runners. He competed in numerous foot races including the 100th running of the Boston Marathon. His marathon best time was around 2 hours and 53 minutes. David spent his winters cross-country skiing anywhere he could find enough snow. One of his favorite winter destinations was Cascade X-C Ski Center. He was a regular participant in the annual Lake Placid Loppet ski race. His close friends, who knew him as “Ploofy,” fondly remember an outing where he (accidentally) made the descent down Mount Marcy on one ski. Other hobbies that David enjoyed included biking, reading, cheering on the Boston Red Sox and tackling The New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. He was also a consistent blood donor for several years. Anyone who knew David knew about Molly. He was incredibly proud of her, and he shared that with those around him.

He is survived by his beloved daughter Molly Ploof, her fiance Michael Sapone, brothers Denis Ploof and Frank Ploof, and many lifelong friends.

David’s funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Rev. John Yonkovig will officiate. A celebration of life will follow at High Peaks Resort.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David’s name to a local charity or organization of choice. The M. B. Clark, inc., Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
