Nancy Jean Tripp Herrington

Nancy Jean Tripp Herrington passed away on Feb. 24 at the Nottingham in Syracuse.

She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Dr. Lee Pierce Herrington.

Born on March 14, 1934, in New Haven, Connecticut, Nancy spent many happy summers with family in Essex, Connecticut. She graduated from Hamden Hall Country Day School, where she and Lee met. She went on to earn an AS degree from Colby-Sawyer College, a BS in Education and a MA in Information Studies at Syracuse University. For many years she served as a science librarian at the SU Science and Technology Library.

A longtime resident of Syracuse, Nancy enjoyed getaways in the Adirondacks at “Pieces,” the vacation home she and Lee built in Indian Lake. Full of adventure, she enjoyed skiing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, sailing and canaling on the Erie Canal. An avid fan of Syracuse sports, Nancy cheered for the basketball and football teams with great gusto. She took pleasure in theater and entertaining. Her collection of owl figures is unsurpassed. An avid crossword puzzler and wordsmith, she was the featured contestant on the Will Shortz NPR Puzzler in 2008.

Nancy is survived by her sons Matthew (Shannon) and Bradford (Debbie), and her daughter Susan (Dominic). Her son Wayne (Brenda) predeceased her in 2013. Her grandchildren are Turner, Ned, Will, Campbell, Alexis, Carson and Colton. Nancy is also survived by two sisters, Lucy Eubanks (Dwaine d.) and Fay Ruotolo (John).

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at a future time. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Essex, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, Connecticut.
