Hubert R. Smith Jr.

Hubert R. Smith Jr., 70, of Cascade Road, Lake Placid, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Hubert was born Sept. 30, 1948 in Lake Placid, the son of Hubert R. Smith Sr. and Margaret (Borden) Smith.

Hubert was a graduate of the class of 1966 from Lake Placid High School. He worked at the Lake Placid Club as security and golf course maintenance from 1968 to his retirement there in 2014. Following his retirement from the Lake Placid Club he went on to work security at the Olympic Ski Jump complex. He retired from the Ski Jumps in August 2018.

He was a member of the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association as a coach of T-Ball and Little League Baseball for several years. Hubert also devoted his time to the youth of Lake Placid by running the Teen-Canteen at the town of North Elba Town Hall.

Hubert played softball for many years and was an avid golfer. Many people would know when he was on the course by his unmistakable “Choo Choo” train whistle when he made a big putt.

He is survived by several cousins and close friends.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the M. B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. A reception to share stories and celebrate the life of Hubert Smith will follow at the Olympic Ski Jumps.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service or the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department in his memory.
