Leonard N. Ely

Leonard N. Ely, 86, of Oneida, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Oneida Healthcare Center, Oneida.

Born in Saranac Lake on Nov. 19, 1928, he was the son of Richard N. Ely and Milla Moe Ely.

Leonard was a 1946 graduate of Saranac Lake Central School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during the Korean War as a mechanic on the aircraft carrier, USS Philipine Sea

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Grace Ely, of Oneida; four daughters: Yvonne Barringer of Burnt Hills, Lynn Newman, Joanne Bevilacqua and Jacqueline Ely, of Saranac Lake; one son, Steven Ely of Webberville, Michigan; one stepson, Mark Cannito; eight grandchildren: Eric Newman, Mary Alice Newman, Kathleen Ely, Scott Richards, Jenna Griffin, Marc, Andrew and Nicholas Cannito; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Perkins; one brother, Peter Ely, of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, James Ely.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. March 21, 2015 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for family and friends wishing to attend.

Friends wishing to remember Leonard can make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association in his memory.
