Mildred S. Dupree

Mildred S. Dupree, 93, of 39 Winona Ave., Saranac Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015.

Born in West Chazy on May 28, 1921, she was the daughter of John and Alice (Beeman) Swain. She married Paul Dupree on Nov. 29, 1947, in St. Bernard’s Church. He predeceased her on Jan. 21, 1990.

Mrs. Dupree attended St. Bernard’s School and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1938. She later attended the University of Albany, graduating in 1942, and then completed her master’s at St. Lawrence University in 1953. Mrs. Dupree was an English teacher at various schools. She taught at Saranac Lake Central School for more than 30 years and served as head of the English Department until her retirement in 1976. She was an active volunteer at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, the Saranac Lake Free Library and the St. Bernard’s School Library and served on the parish council for St. Bernard’s Church for more than 20 years.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews including Susan Smith of Lake Placid, Thomas Swain of Saranac Lake and Virginia Struss of Saranac Lake, and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Doyle of Oneonta. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and two brothers, Robert and Arthur Swain.

Calling hours will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at St. Bernard’s Church, with the Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial will take place in St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake in May.
