Dora L. Fountain

Dora L. Fountain, 101, of Paul Smiths, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at the Franklin County Nursing Home in Malone, where she had been a resident since July.

Born in Chasm Falls on Nov. 5, 1912, she was the daughter of Albert and Mary (Brown) Helms. She married George Fountain on Oct. 2, 1934, at St. Helen’s Church in Chasm Falls. George predeceased her on Aug. 31, 2004.

Dora had been employed at various places, including cooking at the Meacham Lake Inn, and was the postmaster at the Paul Smiths post office for many years. She was a wonderful wife, mother and cook. No one ever left her table hungry. One of Dora’s fondest memories was as a teenager going to work at the Saranac Inn, along with friends Bessie Fayette Williams, Mary Cantell Dibble, Eunick King Monette and Emma Johnson Reyome. They waited table for Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow, just to name a few.

She is survived by four sons, Rouse Fountain and his wife Bethyl of Paul Smiths, John Fountain and his wife Jo-Ann of Westville, Richard Fountain of Westville and Patrick Fountain and his wife Ann of South Lake Tahoe, California; one daughter-in-law, Claudia Fountain of Beulah, Colorado; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; one son, George Fountain; three sisters: Marion, Alice and Claircy; and four brothers: Rouse, William, John and Watson. For the past six years, she has lived with a wonderful family in North Bangor, Dick and Lydia LePage.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Gabriels.
