Margaret L. Lamy
In the early morning hours of Nov. 22, 2013, Margaret Louise Lamy slipped quietly into heaven at the age of 83.
Marge or Margie, as she was affectionately known, was born on Dec. 16, 1929, in Lake Placid to Gordon H. Wilson and Anna Wilson Bathgate.
Marge graduated from Lake Placid High School in June 1947, salutatorian of her class. While in high school she was an accomplished downhill skier, once representing the United States as one of the top 10 women skiers in an international competition versus the top 10 Canadian skiers.
Marge graduated from the University of Rochester in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in journalism. She held various jobs involving writing and promotion, the first being with the Americans for Democratic Action in New York City. She served as editor of the Lake Placid News for several years and as director of public relations for the Adirondack Park Agency. She also did promotional work for the Adirondack Museum.
Her great love was writing. She produced several outstanding manuscripts including “Cross Country Ski Inns of the Eastern U.S. and Canada.”
One of her works is the highly prized History of bobsledding in the United States. This work starts at day one in U.S. bobsled history and continues with remarkable detail. Several members of the family have been entrusted with the task of getting this manuscript into print.
She was highly active socially, publicly, and politically. One could easily say that she was opinionated and set in her thinking. In this department, she was definitely a character or perhaps worse! She was an active member of a writer’s group in Montreal and loved to travel, especially when it involved bobsledding or any of the Olympic sports, wherever they were held. One of her most exciting trips was a unique tour of China with friends and local guides from the area.
She is survived by her step-son Michael Lamy of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her younger, n’ere-do-well brother, Joe Pete Wilson of Lake Placid; nieces: Marcy Wilson Quinn of Rexford, Denise Wilson Bujold of Lake Placid, Katie Wilson of Keene, Georgie Gray of Cleveland, Ohio; nephews Steve Wilson, Joe Pete Wilson, and Gordon “Brandy” Wilson of Lake Placid and Derek Wilson of Reno, Nevada; step-granddaughter Carrie Kirkpatrick of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and her caregiver and dear friend Melody Valmon of Virginia Beach
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband James “Jim” Lamy and her brother Gordon Wilson.
A private graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, May 31 at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a celebration of Marge’s life at 2 p.m. at the Lamy Lodge at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.
