Father Art Johnson

Father Art Johnson, former CEO and president of St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment & Recovery Centers, died March 26, 2014, at the age of 63 at Lourdes McKeen Towers in Florida.

During his decade of service at St. Joseph’s, from 1989 to 1999, Fr. Art, along with the Centers’ Executive Team, embarked on new construction, expansion of services, developing mission awareness, and preparing St. Joseph’s for the changing realities in the healthcare field. Importantly, he established a Board of Directors to provide governance and strategic planning for the growing Agency.

To honor Fr. Art’s extensive contributions to all seeking lasting Recovery, St. Joseph’s Board Room is being dedicated the Fr. Art Johnson, S.A. (Society of the Atonement) Board and Meeting Room.

Fr. Art was born in East Lansdowne, Pa. and raised in Havertown. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Villanova University, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1970 and was ordained a priest in 1977.

He earned master’s degrees in educational and pastoral ministries from Emmanuel College in Boston, and in theology from Catholic University in Washington. He also earned a certificate in alcohol/drug studies from Loyola Marymount University.

In 1999, Fr. Art was elected Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. From 2005 to 2013, he served as Parochial Vicar of Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling.

All are welcome to attend a celebration of Fr. Art’s life at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 16 in Fellowship Hall on the campus of St. Joseph’s in Saranac Lake.
