Richard L. “Dick” Hall

He was born February 4th 1935 in Keene Valley. The son of Stanley E. Hall and Anna Hickey Hall. Richard was predeceased by his parents, and two siblings.

Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years Joan; his children Richard, Ronald and Carol; his grandchildren: Daniel, Jessica, Robert, Sunny, Summer and Ryan; his sister Ann; many cousins, nieces and nephews and his Golden Retriever Riley.

Richard graduated from Keene Central School in 1952 and graduated with honors from Albany Business College. Richard was a devoted citizen of Keene Valley where he lived his entire life. He served his community as councilman for the town of Keene, a member of the Keene Valley Central School Board of Education for seven years, and Keene Youth Commissions Board for 20 years.

Richard and Joan bought the Valley Grocery on Jan. 1, 1969. The store is a starting place for so many young people to have their first job, develop a sound work ethic, and ready them for their future. For 44 years, the store has served as a central part of the community.

Richard and Joan were fortunate to travel the world together. From The Great Wall Of China, the rivers of Europe, the glaciers of Alaska, the cliffs of Ireland, the tulips of Holland, the pyramids of Egypt, the fjords of Iceland, and beyond. They truly enjoyed the adventure and the human nature to explore and wander.

Richard was devoted to the Keene Valley Hose and Ladder Company No. 1. Since 1965 Richard held various positions. In addition to serving as a dedicated volunteer firefighter he was Fire Chief for 27 years, Fire Police Chief for 15 years, and a member of the Board of Directors for 16 years. He helped organize and build the first Ambulance Squad. Richard was also a 54 year member of the Keene Valley Rod and Gun Club.

Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 24 at W.M. Marvin’s Son’s funeral home in Elizabethtown. There will be a service at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 at St. Brendan’s Church with burial at Norton’s Cemetery. There will be a reception at the AuSable Inn following.
