Robert Lockwood Loomis

Robert L. Loomis, 87, of 78 Will Rogers Drive, Saranac Lake, and formerly of Colebrook, Conn., and New York, N.Y., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013.

Born in New York City on Jan. 12, 1926, he was the son of Alfred and Priscilla Lockwood Loomis. He married Julia Wolfe on May 31,1957, in New York City. Julia predeceased him in 1991.

He graduated from Fountain Valley School, Colorado Springs, Colo. (1944) and Yale University (1950), having served two years in the Navy at the end of World War II. He spent the next year-and-a-half sailing around the world as second mate on the brigantine Yankee, acting with his fellow shipmates as informal ambassadors of the U.S. in every port of call along the 25,000-mile route. He was a lifelong yachtsman and a member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the Cruising Club of America and the Ocean Cruising Club. He was also an enthusiastic singer, often joining with his brothers and friends and family in barbershop quartets and folk song. For 25 years he sang in the chorus of the Blue Hill Troupe, an amateur Gilbert and Sullivan theater group in New York City. He was an avid entrepreneur, co-founding companies in film production, boating (Marina America) and advertising (Vango Advertising).

He is survived by a son, Timothy L. Loomis of Saranac Lake; a daughter, Julia W. Loomis and her husband Howard C. Runyon of Lake Placid; two brothers: Worth Loomis and his wife Louise of Bloomfield, Conn., and Harvey B. Loomis and his wife Linda Bird Francke of Sagaponack; a sister, Sally Campbell of Cold Spring Harbor; two grandchildren: Miranda L. Runyon and Harvey R.E. Runyon, both of Lake Placid; eight nieces and nephews and eight grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial will be in Norton Cemetery in Keene. A memorial service will take place at a later date in New York City. Friends wishing to remember Robert L.
