Helen M. Meagher

Helen Marie Meagher, age 86, passed away on July 9, 2013 at Spring Lake Village Health Center.

She was born on March 24, 1927 in Saranac Lake, a daughter of Leah Muncil Meagher and Cornelius Meagher.

Helen graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1944. She later entered the School of Nursing at Syracuse University when the first bachelor of science degree program was offered. She completed the program in 1949. In 1952, she moved to San Francisco where she was a medical surgical teaching supervisor for three years at Mt. Zion Hospital. For the following 37 years, she was employed by Blue Shield of California in management and administration, which included positions as claims unit manager, special project leader, and for the last 12 years, manager of the quality assurance unit. In 2001 she moved to Spring Lake Village in Santa Rosa where she actively participated in programs that enhanced the lives of fellow residents.

She is survived by her twin sister, Mary Lee Callaghan; nephews, Kevin Callaghan, Richard (Patricia) Meagher and Neil Meagher; and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, paternal grandparents, John and Mary Anne (Sheridan) Meagher and Benjamin and Minnie (Quain) Muncil.

Local arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial mass will be take place at the Church of the Assumption in Gabriels at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7 with the Rev. McAvoy officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Paul Smiths.
