Gertrude G. Dewyea

TUPPER LAKE – Gertrude G. Dewyea, 86, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Conifer on Aug. 16, 1926, she was the daughter of Samuel and Marceline (Blair) Clark. On Sept. 29, 1943, she married John Dewyea, and together they had nine children. She was predeceased by him on Dec. 16, 1981.

A homemaker all her life, she joined the Foster Grandparent program in 1982 and then the Senior Companion program after that, and continued with that for more than 25 years. She worked for many years at Moody Road IRC and truly loved spending time with the residents there.

She enjoyed traveling, bingo, especially her trips to Atlantic City to gamble. Some her favorite places were Florida and California to visit family. In June of this year she was able to make the trip to California, where she enjoyed a 10-day visit.

She spent the last two years as a resident at Mercy Living Center, where she enjoyed playing bingo and visiting with the other residents.

Gertrude is survived by her children: David and his wife Sidonna, Richard, Terry, Ruth Burnell, Daniel Sr., Lisa Reed and her husband Mark, Michael and his wife Michele, and James. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Jack Jr. in 2010.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 24 Cliff Ave., Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, with burial following at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Mercy Living Center Activity Fund in care of the funeral home.
