Edward T. Markey
Edward T. “Ed” Markey, 82, formerly of Old Forge and Rochester, died peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 5, 2013. His eldest son, Patrick, and daughter in law, Joanne, and the Beechwood Nursing Home Staff were with him at the time of his passing. Ed had resided at Beechwod Nursing Home for the last nine months of his life.
Ed was born Sept. 2, 1930, in Elizabeth, N.J., to John T Markey Sr., and Catherine C. Langtree.
Edward taught math at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, retiring in 1992. He was the Varsity Basketball Coach from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s, winning several Section 5 Diocesan Championships.
Edward was also a veteran, and very proud to have served in the Navy aboard the one of the first nuclear powered aircraft carriers, the U.S.S. Forestall, during the 1950s.
Ed and and his wife, Kay, traveled extensively after retirement, often accompanied by dear friends, Ann and Jarl Hasby. They eventually settled near Old Forge and were active members of St. Bartholomew’s Church. Edward was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the early 2000s, and was cared for by his wife, Kay, until her passing in April 2010.
The family fondly remembers the kindness of Fr. Joe Giroux (St. Bartholomew), the assistance provided by HASCA (Home Aid Services of the Central Adirondacks), as well as the compassion of the Old Forge community who quietly provided assistance to Ed and Kay during this period of time.
Edward is survived by a brother, John, of Long Island; a sister, Mary, of East Orange, N.J. Edward is also survived by Patrick (Joanne), of Getzville, grandchildren: Nikki, Callie, John, and Michael; a daughter, Ann, of Irondequoit, and a son, Timothy (Patricia), of Gaithersburg, Md., and their children: Thomas, Brendan, and Daniela.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles and his beloved wife, Mary Kathleen “Kay” Markey (nee Pendergast).
The family is planning a memorial service to honor both parents at St. Bartholomew’s Church at a later date.
We are very grateful for the care Edward received under the guidance of Kathy Jasinski, RN, of Tennyson Senior Care, Williamsville from March 2010 to October 2012; followed by a skilled nursing facility directed by Lola Kordela, RN, of the Horizons Memory Care unit of Beechwood Skilled Nursing home.
In both cases, the compassionate and competent staff of each facility should be considered role models in care for the elderly.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, Aug. 12 at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, 27 St. Bernard St., Saranac Lake with burial to follow. St. Bernard’s Church was also the site of Edward and Kay’s Wedding Ceremony, June 21, 1956. There will be no prior visitation.
