The Wild Center Wild Walk is open for Winter

The Wild Center is one of our favorite places to visit. It houses all the essentials for a multigenerational family: coffee, animals, coffee, interactive activities, coffee and wonderful trails to work off all the caffeine consumed. I enjoy the exhibits and am constantly amazed at how this museum is able to bring environmental awareness to a level that is interactive and fun. We can watch a movie, look through the Naturalist’s Cabinet or snowshoe along the trails because none of us are ever too old to learn and explore.

On Jan. 20, The Wild Center is hosting a free community day in honor of Martin Luther King Day, but don’t worry if you can’t attend. The Wild Center is open every weekend through the winter. The Wild Walk, free snowshoes, trails and most special weekend activities are all included in the price of admission. With admission, there are opportunities to learn more about ice fishing (with a guide) as well as live animal excursions, and forest bathing.

Keep in mind that this winter is the first year that the Wild Walk has stayed open for the season. The Wild Walk is a beautiful accessible walkway that gradually climbs through the tree line. Interactive features and gorgeous views are just a few of the amenities. For those with limited mobility, the Wild Walk may be tricky during the winter months so come prepared. Since it is an outside activity, please dress for the weather.

The “Behind the Scenes” tour gives glimpses into the green energy system, aquatic life support, and intricate workings to maintain the health of all its animals. The 60-minute tour involves walking about a half-mile as well as going up and downstairs. The tours take place from 3 to 4 p.m. each weekend for an additional fee of $5/members and $10/adults, $7/youth (5-17). Pre-registration is encouraged by calling 518-359-7800.

No matter the weather outside we’ve always found the Wild Center to always be a place to explore, learn, and relax. Regular winter hours for the Wild Center are Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $22/adults (18-64), $15/youth (5-17), $20/seniors (65+) and military and free/children (age 4 and under). All purchased tickets are good for two consecutive days. Call or go to www.wildcenter.org for a complete list of events and activities. Enjoy!
