SARANAC LAKE – In the final scene of Ibsen’s classic play “A Doll’s House,” Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own.

Lucas Hnath’s Tony-nominated “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” playing at Pendragon Aug. 2-18, picks up where Ibsen’s groundbreaking play left off.

Fifteen years have passed past since Nora left her husband, Torvald. In the years since, the two have had no contact. Nora has become a successful feminist writer, while Torvald continued to work at the bank and raised their children on his own. In this sequel , that the New York Times calls “funny and illuminating,” Nora returns to the house she abandoned and the domestic life she thought she had given up forever with an vital request for the family she abandoned.

“A Doll’s House, Part 2” is directed by Anne Thibault, an associate professor of theatre at Eastern Illinois University, who directed “The Seagull” at Pendragon in 2015.

“‘Doll’s House,’ Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece, has been a part of my theatrical life for as long as I can remember,” Thibault said. “I’m very grateful no video exists of my first attempt, at the ripe age of 15, at Nora’s final monologue and that I didn’t grow up at a time where I would have broadcast it on Instagram Live. I can only imagine the performance might have lacked just a little depth of understanding of marriage and motherhood. I worked on the play several times, in college and graduate school, and now teach it in my Script Analysis course to my undergraduate students. As my life has shifted, as a daughter and a wife and a mother, my understanding and experience of the play has deepened and changed. I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to work on this follow-up to the original, which playwright Lucas Hnath has cheekily titled A Doll’s House Part 2.”

“You don’t need to be familiar with Ibsen’s play to appreciate this production, so whether you’re an Ibsen fan or brand new to the story, enjoy this company of phenomenal actors at the top of their game explore the questions Ibsen left unanswered.”

Nora is played by Dee Pelletier, who is known for her appearances in “Consensus Reality,” “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” Her stage credits include “August: Osage County” on Broadway, “Women Without Men” at the Mint Theater Company and “The Soap Myth” with Ed Asner. Christopher Leifheit, most recently seen on the Pendragon stage in “The Turn of the Screw” and “Guys on Ice,” portrays Torvald. Josie Good returns to play Anne Marie, the nanny. She played Christine Linde in Pendragon’s 1998 production of “A Doll’s House.” Laura Menzie rounds out the cast out as Nora’s daughter, Emmy.

“A Doll’s House, Part 2” opens this Friday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. with an opening night reception following the show and continues Aug. 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Aug. 11 and 18.
