NCCC, Craigardan partner on summer pottery classes

SARANAC LAKE — North Country Community College is partnering with Craigardan, a nonprofit arts, agriculture and academic center in Keene, to host a pair of four-week pottery classes this summer at the college’s Saranac Lake campus.

The first class, “Wheel Throwing,” will be taught by Hedy Yang. It will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 26 to July 17. It’s open to all levels of students. This fun class guides the beginner through basic ceramics: working with clay, the centering process, pulling cylinders, and creating functional ware on the wheel. For more advanced students, Hedy will teach new tips and techniques for getting the right form and making larger pieces. We will be learning basic glazing techniques, as well as the bisque and glaze firing processes. Each participant will take home finished functional wares, glazed and fired in the electric kiln. The cost is $125 including materials and firings.

The second class, “Wheel Throwing: Bowls and Pottery with Lids,” will also be taught by Hedy Yang. It will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from July 24 to Aug. 14. This fun class guides the beginner through the basic steps on the wheel. For more advanced students, Hedy will teach new tips and techniques for making bowls and lidded pottery such as jars, crocks, and even tea pots. Participants will learn basic glazing techniques, as well as the bisque and glaze firing processes. Each participant will take home finished functional wares, glazed and fired in the electric kiln. The cost is $125 including materials and firings.

Interested participants can sign up for both classes, although beginners who have never worked with clay may wish to take the first course.

Both classes will take place in the Pottery Studio on the college’s Saranac Lake campus, 23 Santanoni Ave., Saranac Lake NY 12983.

Space in the classes is limited.
