BluSeed offers free children’s spring break art classes

Sometimes all the stars align. That is what happened after a friend suggested I send a quick email to Saranac Lake’s BluSeed Studios Artistic Director Carol Marie Vossler about the possibility of working together.

My children grew up participating in the Weibrecht AfterSchool Workshops at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. I know those LPCA workshops helped foster a sense of creativity in both of my children. Why couldn’t we model a program after theirs and bring free art classes to BluSeed?

Nothing seems impossible after a meeting with Carol. She already has folders of children’s art classes in the works because she’s always envisioned offering free classes to area students. It just needed to be the right time and that time is now.

Registration opens today, March 15, for BluSeed Studios Free Spring Break Art Classes on a first-come, first-served basis. Class descriptions are available on BluSeedStudios.org and pre-registration is required by calling 518-891-3799. Vossler specifically started her art initiative as a creative outlet for all children, kindergarten through 8th Grade, staying in the area during the upcoming school holiday.

The goal is to slowly grow the program to offer more free afterschool workshops, but Carol is currently just focusing on this one week of classes. Children will have the opportunity to view famous paintings and create based on the artist’s style during “Paint Like the Masters.” Participants can experiment with paper in “3D Creations” or sign up for the “Collage/Mixed Media” class. The fourth class explores “Fiber Arts.” Special thanks go to the Saranac Lake School District, Tops, Hannaford, and Price Chopper.

These classes are sure to fill up, but don’t worry. BluSeed offers a variety of other paid workshops and classes for adults and children. There are numerous ways that young and old can bring art into their lives.

I am so excited to be even a small part of this process. Carol is a dynamo, wanting all children to have access to the creative arts. Having art available to young people shouldn’t be a gift, but sometimes it’s treated that way. Creating art can help develop fine motor skills, foster cultural awareness, increase visual-spatial learning skills, and strength problem-solving. It’s also fun.

Keep in mind that LPCA’s afterschool workshop registration just opened on Monday, offering a variety of free artistic choices. Both BluSeed Studios and the Weibrecht LPCA art programs are open to all area children.
