LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Center for the Arts Children’s Theatre will open its production of “Dorothy In Wonderland tonight.

The musical, which stars 42 kindergarten through 8th-grade students, blends the classic fairy tales of the “Wizard of Oz” and “Alice in Wonderland” as Dorothy Gale, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion get pulled into a tornado, which transports and separates them in Alice’s world, Director McCayla Quinn said.

Throughout the play, the bunch will have to go on new adventures, resolve conflicts and form new friendships to locate each other and help Dorothy find her way home.

Local teenagers will also participate in the musical working as the stage crew to ensure performances run smoothly.

Parents as well as the community should come out to support the play in order to encourage the young actors and to promote local arts programs, Quinn said.

“The arts are incredibly important and all of these kids put in so much hard work to put on this production” Quinn said. “There is not a strong arts program in every school so the fact that the play is offered to surrounding areas is so important.”

Additionally, the musical offers local children and teenagers a positive and constructive activity after school while allowing them to participate in their regular after school activities, Quinn said.

“The main thing kids gain out of the play is friendships,” Quinn said. “It’s multiple towns, so they can create relationships with children from Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Keene Valley and Wilmington. The best part is building lifelong friendships.”
