Low Lily tonight at Upper Jay Arts Center

UPPER JAY – The Vermont-based band Low Lily will perform their stylings of instrumental folk and roots music at the Upper Jay Art Center tonight.

The band will travel from Brattleboro, Vermont as part of their practice series for the 36th annual Old Songs Folk Festival in Altamont, starting June 23. The quartet consists of Liz Simmons on vocals and guitar; Flynn Cohen on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Lissa Schneckenburger on vocals and fiddle; and Corey DiMario on double bass. Each member, Simmons said, has been a professional musician “since they were fresh out of college for music.”

The group will perform a mixture of original material, traditional folk songs and covers of modern songs with a folk twist, for example, their recent acoustic rendition of a hip hop song by the rapper Nelly. Simmons said each member has been influenced by a love of folk music from Ireland, Scotland, New England and Appalachia.

Low Lily’s music relies heavily on vocal harmonies between its three singers and the subtle build of instrumentals written mostly by Flynn, a bluegrass musician who has played worldwide with artists including John Whelan and Adrienne Young.

Simmons said their lyrics, which have common themes of love and travel, come from “observing the world around us and finding little stories we think will be fun or meaningful to tell.”

The group released their first album last year and is booked for several festivals this summer. To preview their music visit their website at www.lowlily.com.
