Northern Lights Choir Friday at St. Bernard’s

SARANAC LAKE – Northern Lights Choir will host its winter concert Friday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Church.

Northern Lights Choir, under the direction of Helen Demong, is going to present a musical tapestry for this year’s winter concert. A performance of choral pieces across the spectrum of time and genre. This program will feature a variety of styles from traditional holiday music, songs of different cultures, and contains wonderfully powerful works to surely ring in the season. There will be something special for everyone.

The group will open with an acapella arr angement of “Lo How a Rose” and sing some holiday favorites including “Still, Still, Still.” There is a Hebrew piece, “Erev Shel Shoshanim,” which translates to “Evening of Roses.” The choir will perform Erik Whitaker’s piece, “The Seal Lullaby,” spirituals, a traditional Korean song and a new African piece. The gospel spiritual “Wade in the Water,” and the reminiscent “Cape Breton Lullaby,” feature the men and women, respectively. The concert will feature a duet with Kimberly Weems and Christopher Gould singing “Conte Partiro.” This evening of music at St. Bernard’s Church will feature a pairing of two different composers’ settings of Ubi Caritas, capitalizing charity and love and echoing. Maurice Durufle’s setting of Ubi Caritas will be sung acappella by a small, select ensemble. The setting by the Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo, will feature the full 75 voice Northern Lights Choir with Drew Benware playing solo piano.
