True spy story is book club pick

LAKE PLACID – “Strangers on a Bridge” by James Donovan, the book upon which the movie “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks is based, has been chosen by Lake Placid Institute Book Club for its 7 p.m. Nov. 30 discussion when it meets at the Lake Placid Public Library.

In his book, the late Mr. Donovan (a seasonal resident of Lake Placid) describes his 1957 trial defense of reputed chief of Soviet espionage in the United States and accomplished artist Rudolf Ivanovich Abel and the 1962 exchange of Abel that Donovan negotiated for downed U.S. U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.

This recounting of the famous Cold War interlude was originally published in 1964 to rave reviews for its “enthralling,” and “noirish” writing and content.

All are welcome to participate or just listen at the LPI meeting at the library.
