Rangers recover body, assist several injuries
State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers helped retrieve a drowned man’s body in Long Lake this month, and also assisted numerous hikers in the region who were lost, exhausted or injured. There have been several leg injuries in the High Peaks Wilderness since the start of July.

Unstable ankle

Ray Brook dispatch received a call from a hiker with an unstable ankle injury on Cascade Mountain at 12:09 p.m. on July 8. Forest rangers Allison Rooney and Charles Foutch splinted the hiker’s ankle and helped her back to her vehicle. Resources were clear at 3:20 p.m.

Leg injury

Ray Brook dispatch requested forest ranger assistance for a hiker, 45, from Manhattan, with a leg injury on Ampersand Mountain at 4:05 p.m. on July 6. Forest rangers Hannah O’Connor and Robert Praczkajlo reached the hiker at 5:29 p.m. and assisted her back to the trailhead. She decided to seek further medical attention on her own. Resources were clear at 6:31 p.m.

Exhausted hiker

Ray Brook dispatch received a call from a hiker, 50, suffering from exhaustion on Ampersand Mountain at 3:20 p.m. on July 5. Forest rangers Jenna Curcio and Hannah O’Connor reached the hiker at 5:20 p.m. and helped her back to the trailhead. Resources were clear at 11 p.m.

Lost hikers

Ray Brook dispatch received a 911 text from Essex County regarding two hikers lost between Mount Marcy and Upper Ausable Lake at 6:51 p.m. on July 5. Forest rangers Nicole DuChene, Andrew Lewis, Robert Praczkajlo and Jamison Martin reached the hikers at 11:50 p.m. and helped them back to the Adirondack Mountain Reserve.

Knee injury

Ray Brook dispatch received a call regarding a hiker, 57, from Walton, with a knee injury on the Mount Van Hoevenberg trail near Phelps Mountain at 10:50 p.m. on July 5. Assistant forest ranger Patnode reached the hiker and assisted him to the Marcy Dam outpost. More forest rangers reached them by 12:45 a.m. on Saturday and they reached and rehydrated the hiker, then helped him back to his vehicle.

Drowning

Franklin County requested forest ranger assistance with a suspected drowning in Long Lake at 11:24 p.m. on July 4. Two people had jumped into the water at a marina around 10 p.m. and neither could be located. Forest rangers Evan Nahor, Jason Scott and Neilson Snye searched overnight. One swimmer was located alive and out of the water. The second swimmer, 66, from Slingerlands, was found dead at 9:30 a.m. and turned over to the coroner.

Overnight rescue

Ray Brook dispatch received a call from Essex County dispatch at 11:48 p.m. on July 4 regarding a hiker with an unstable ankle injury on Giant Mountain. Forest rangers Robert Praczkajlo and Allison Rooney reached the hiker, 52, from Kinderhook, at 1:15 a.m. and helped him down to the trailhead. The hiker then left to seek further medical treatment on his own. Resources were clear at 5:15 a.m. on July 5.

Ankle injury

Ray Brook dispatch received a call regarding a hiker with an ankle injury on the Street Mountain trail at 3:50 p.m. on July 3. Forest ranger Hannah O’Connor splinted the hiker’s ankle and helped him down the trail. O’Connor and rangers Nicole DuChene, Andrew Lewis and Robert Praczkajlo paddled the hiker across Heart Lake, where he was met by a Lake Placid ambulance. Resources were clear at 6:34 p.m.

Elderly hiker fall

The Wright Mountain summit steward reported a hiker, 70, had fallen, suffering a broken nose and teeth, at 3:34 p.m. on June 30. Forest ranger Peter Evans reached the hiker by 5 p.m., assessed his injuries and helped him back to the trailhead, where they were met by a Lake Placid ambulance. Resources were clear at 6:11 p.m.

Separated hikers

Forest ranger Robert Praczkajlo responded to a call from a hiker who was separated from his hiking partner while descending Wright Peak at 11 p.m. on June 27. Praczkajlo reached the hiker, 58, from Florida, at 12:09 a.m. on June 28. The hiker was suffering from leg cramps. Praczkajlo helped the hiker back to the trailhead and reunited him with his hiking party. Resources were clear at 2:39 a.m.
