Sporck, Smith to receive SLCSD distinguished alumni awards

Committee to establish foundation to support Community Schools program

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake Central School’s Distinguished Alumni Committee recently announced this year’s award recipients and the establishment of the SLCS Foundation.

This year’s awards will be given to Charles E. Sporck and David Nathan Smith.

Sporck was born in Saranac Lake in 1927 and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1945. After high school, Sporck studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1950.

After graduation, he worked for General Electric followed by work in the semiconductor division of Fairchild Camera and Instrument in 1959; rising to the position of general manager. In 1967, Sporck was recruited by NationalSemiconductor, which was at that time struggling financially. Under his leadership the company focused on mass production of low-cost computer chips. For a time, the company was the largest chip maker in Silicon Valley.

Smith was born in 1936 in Saranac Lake and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1954. He went on to earn a bachelor’s from Harvard in 1958 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard in 1961.

He was assistant director of Institution Government of North Carolina from 1961 to 1963, inspector of native courts in Nigeria from 1963 to 1965 and New York assistant attorney general from 1965 to 1967. Smith went on to become assistant dean of Harvard Law School from 1967 to 1983 and vice dean from 1983 to 2002. In 2004, he was appointed vice-rector of Macau University of Science and Technology in Taipa, Macau. Smith has also been a consultant on foreign investment policy and natural resource policy to various governments since 1969, an honorary professor at Northwest University School of Politics and Law, Xi’an, China, since 2000, acting dean School Law, City University Hong Kong from 1998-2001 and consultant to various U.S. presidents since 1998.

A dinner to honor the distinguished Saranac Lake alumni will be held at the Hotel Saranac on Nov. 5. A reception and silent auction will be held in the Great Hall from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with dinner and awards to follow in the hotel’s ballroom. This dinner will also serve to formally announce the formation of the SLCS Foundation. The SLCS Foundation is being established to support the Community Schools Project.
