Lake Placid board plans STR meeting today

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees has planned a special work session today to discuss proposed housing and short-term vacation rental permit definitions as the village’s new STR regulations continue to take shape.

The village board is approaching the final months of its process to rework its STR regulations, and the special meeting today comes nearly one month after the village released its first draft of proposed STR regulations. Trustee Jackie Kelly said on Monday that the village board is now proposing to allow hosted STRs to rent for an unlimited number of days per year, and that proposal will be part of today’s work session discussion. The village originally proposed a 90-day occupancy limit for both hosted and unhosted rentals.

The village also wants to discuss possible changes to the definitions of the types of housing in the town and village land use code — like the definition of “boardinghouse” and “bed and breakfast” — to make sure that the town and village are in agreement on the terms and allowances within those definitions. Before the village adopted its first set of STR regulations in 2020, some STR owners requested a conditional use permit for their properties, arguing that their homes were “boardinghouses” rather than STRs — some neighbors of those STR owners argued at the time that those were efforts to skirt upcoming regulations for STRs, and town and village officials have voiced similar concerns in recent months.

Today’s work session will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the North Elba Town Hall. People can attend virtually at meet.goto.com/lpv or by calling 1-872-240-3212 and entering the access code 690-687-301. The work session is intended for board discussion, according to village Clerk Anita Estling, and public comments will be at the discretion of the board.
