‘Theater summit’ this Tuesday

Grants available for North Country theaters

SARANAC LAKE — An “informal theater summit” will be held in town on Tuesday as the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts informs local theaters about their ability to apply for grants.

ALCA is letting North Country theaters know they can get $2,000 to $5,000 of general operating support grants from the Creative Opportunity Fund of the Alliance of Regional Theatres/New York, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts.

ALCA Grant Coordinator Fred Balzac said an information session will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pendragon Theatre. These grants, he said, are for smaller theater companies — ones with budgets under $500,000.

“The aim is to help theater groups stabilize and build capacity for themselves, while increasing funding opportunities for companies that have been left out of the mainstream because of barriers associated with racial, economic, disability and sexual identity and/or geographic location — including rural areas such as the Adirondack North Country,” Balzac wrote in a press release.

In rural areas, he said there are fewer people to attend shows, and often, they have less money to do so than in urban areas. Still, he pointed out, there are quite a few arts organizations in the area, offering a lot of arts and culture.

Balzac said he reached out to every theater organization he could think of in North Country. Pendragon Theatre itself cannot apply for these grants, because it receives direct funding from the state Council on the Arts.

The application deadline for the COF grant is Oct. 18 at 5 p.m.

After a 90-minute session, Balzac said everyone will be invited to a gathering in the Great Room of the Hotel Saranac to mingle and discuss collaborations. Collaboration is big for non-profits, he said, and many of these groups have ongoing collaborations.
