Four more die of COVID as case numbers rise

In the past week there have been four new deaths from COVID-19 in Franklin and Essex counties.

The Essex County Health Department reported two deaths on Tuesday. The state Department of Health reported two new COVID-19 fatalities in Franklin County over the weekend. Neither department provided more information on the people who died.

In total, 58 people have died from COVID-19 in Essex County throughout the pandemic and 37 have died in Franklin County.

An outbreak of COVID-19 at the Federal Corrections Institute at Ray Brook grew again over the weekend, with statistics from the Federal Bureau of Prisons showing 119 inmates and 10 staff positive for COVID-19, up from 104 inmates and five staff on Friday.

Four people with COVID-19 were hospitalized at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake on Tuesday. None of these patients were on a ventilator, according to Adirondack Health.

ECHD on Tuesday reported 747 new COVID-19 cases discovered between Jan. 10 and 17.

Franklin County had 862 active COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. Over the weekend, county officials reported 284 new cases, 166 confirmed by PRC test, 118 confirmed by at-home tests.

Outbreaks of COVID-19 continued among inmates at all three state prisons in Malone — Franklin County Public Health reported 14 cases at Franklin Correctional, six at Bare Hill Correctional and 13 at Upstate Correctional on Thursday.

There was also one inmate in Franklin County Jail who tested positive, according to the county.

A map FCPH created using data from Jan. 13 showed 116 COVID-19 cases in Harrietstown, 109 in Tupper Lake. 24 in Brighton, 17 in Franklin and 209 in Malone.

The Essex County Health Department no longer breaks down its COVID-19 case data by town.

FCPH has scheduled vaccine booster clinics in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake.

On Jan. 26 it will hold a booster clinic at the Saranac Lake Free Library, 109 Main St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pfizer doses are for people ages 12 and up. Moderna doses are for people ages 18 and up.

Drop-ins are welcome, but limited dependent on the amount of vaccine.

On Feb. 24 FCPH will hold a Pfizer booster clinic in Tupper Lake at Holy Ghost Academy, 40 Marion St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These doses are for people ages 12 and up. Registration links have not been created yet for this clinic.
