Olympic Car Show returns Sunday as a cruise-in

LAKE PLACID — The Olympic Car Show will return on Sunday, Sept. 5 after taking a year off due the coronavirus pandemic, and there will be some notable changes.

First, since the show’s home — the Olympic Speedskating Oval — is unavailable due to reconstruction, the event will be held at the North Elba Show Grounds as part of the I Love BBQ and Music Festival. Second, there will be no parade up and down Main Street and around the oval and no awards.

This year’s event will be more of a cruise-in than a car show, according to Lake Placid Ski Club President Carol Hoffman. The ski club has been organizing the Olympic Car Show since the early 1980s with the Adirondack Classic Chevy Club, whose president is Hoffman’s husband Doug, a local accountant.

There will be no preregistration this year; classic vehicle owners register at the gate, which opens at 11 a.m. There will be a special parking section for the classic cars. The cruise-in fee is $20 per vehicle, and that includes two passes to the I Love BBQ and Music Festival.

On Saturday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., classic car owners will gather at the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, 456 Old Military Road. There is no fee for the gathering, and food will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for the fire department.

All proceeds from Sunday’s cruise-in will benefit the Lake Placid Ski Club’s youth programs. There are programs for alpine racing and recreational skiing and snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country racing and recreational skiing, freestyle, ski jumping and Nordic combined. It is a nonprofit organization funded by memberships, fundraising and a donation from the town of North Elba.

“We administer a recreational ski and snowboard program at Whiteface that happens two days a week after school,” Hoffman said. “I learned to ski in that program, so that was like 63 years ago, probably.”

The ski club also helps reimburse members for ski race entry fees.

“We help the jumping program by helping Colin (Delaney) get equipment,” Hoffman said.

The Lake Placid Ski Club is celebrating its centennial this year. The annual sign up and ski sale will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the North Elba Show Grounds.

The I Love BBQ and Music Festival, a fundraiser for the Shipman Youth Center, continues today and Sunday.
