Route 73 roadwork planned

The state Department of Transportation is planning roadwork along portions of state Route 73 in the towns of Keene and North Elba.

The road will be reduced to a single lane with alternating flows of traffic controlled by flaggers between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, beginning Monday, Aug. 16, to facilitate a guide rail replacement project. Runs of existing guide rail will be replaced in the same location as they currently exist.

The lane reductions will be between county Route 51 (Gilmore Hill Road) west of the hamlet of Keene and Newman Road at the south end of the village of Lake Placid.

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of September, weather permitting.

Drivers are reminded to obey flaggers’ directions when present and slow down significantly whenever encountering roadside vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights, including maintenance and construction vehicles in work zones.

Drivers are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
